BACKGROUND: On June 17TH 1936, Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler was appointed to the newly created position of Chef der Deutschen Polizei im Reichsministerium des Innern, (Chief of the German Police in the National Ministry of the Interior), effectively giving him full control of all police agencies within Germany including the Feuerschutzpolizei, (Fire Protection Police). As a result of this appointment and the restructuring of all the separate German state police into a single national police force new regulations were instituted on June 25TH 1936 to bring about uniformity in dress for all police through-out the country. The Police were divided into eight assorted branches of service with each branch being assigned a specific identifying, Truppenfarbe, (branch of service color), with the Feuerschutzpolizei being allocated carmine truppenfarbe. The Feuerschutzpolizei were further distinguished from the other police branches of service with blue uniforms and headgear instead of the typical police green uniforms.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Nice quality, Feuerschutzpolizei NCO’s visor cap features a deep navy blue wool body, a black velvet centerband and Feuerschutzpolizei carmine wool truppenfarbe, (Branch of service color), piping to the crown edge and both the top and bottom edges of the centerband. The front center of the cap has a three piece national tri-color cockade consisting of a stamped, black, fluted, alloy base, roundel and an inset red central dot. The front center of the centerband has a stamped, two piece, nickel/silver plated, white frosted, first pattern, (circa April 1934- June 1936), alloy, police eagle encompassed by a vertically oval oak-leaf wreath. The nicely detailed, left facing eagle features extended, tapered, pointed wing tips and is braze mounted on the vertically oval laurel leaf wreath with the eagles wings extending beyond the outer edges of the wreath. The detailing includes feathering to the wings, veins to the laurel leafs and a pebbled field to the swastika. The cap has a blackened leather chinstrap with two sheet metal sliding length adjustment buckles. The chinstrap is secured to the cap by two, small black painted, sheet metal buttons. The cap has an extended, forward, black lacquered, vulcanfibre visor with a subtly raised lip to the forward edge. The interior crown of the cap is lined with an orangish/tan oilcloth lining while the body of the cap is lined in rayon. The crown lining has a clear celluloid sweat rhomboid fully intact. The interior of the cap also has a wide tan leather sweatband with ventilation perforations to the front forehead section. The cap has no visible size markings and is roughly size 55. Cap is near mint with only a few super tiny moth nips on the truppenfarbe. Nice!    (Ex Philippe Gillain Collection)
