S013489 EM/NCO'S MOUNTAIN CAP. (Bergmütze)

BACKGROUND: The Mountain cap was originally introduced for wear by Mountain, Ski and Jäger personnel in the German army in the early 1930's, with the design based on the caps worn by Austrian Mountain troops in WWI. On December 1ST 1940 the Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler authorized wear of the Mountain cap for personnel serving in the SS-Gebirgs-Division "Nord" and the SS-Freiwillingen-Gebirgs-Division "Prinz Eugen". On April 15TH 1941 wear of the mountain cap was extended to all SS mountain personnel as distinctive head dress and wear of the overseas cap by mountain troops was to be discontinued. With the introduction of the SS version of the M43 cap on October 1ST 1943 SS mountain troops were issued a distinctive edelweiss cap insignia to differentiate themselves from other personnel.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Field-grey wool/rayon blend construction cap features a high forward crown a short extended forward visor and fold down back and side panels with a scalloped front edge and forward sides with a single molded bakelite button retainer positioned at the front center. The back and side panels were designed to be folded down to protect the wearers ears and neck and the scalloped front section could be secured with the button closed under the wearers chin. The button appears to have its original stitching. The TK insignia was removed from the cap, but the side still retains its original eagle and edelweiss with original stitching. The cap has a short, extended, cloth covered forward visor with a small raised lip to the top of the forward edge and a single row of reinforcement stitching to the bottom of the forward edge. The interior of the cap is fully lined in ribbed grey hbt rayon blend material. The lining also has black size, "57" and date, "3012/44" inkstamps. Nice clean original, just needs a skull.
