S011295 BELGIAN FLEMISH SS SPONSORING MEMBER'S LAPEL PIN. (SS Fördernde Mitglieder Aufschlagnadel) 

BACKGROUND: Belgium has always been internally divided into two diverse groups of peoples and regions, the Dutch speaking Flemish from Flanders and the French speaking Walloon’s from Wallonie. During Belgium’s occupation the Germans kept the two groups separate and allowed each of them to retain pro nazi fascist political organizations, the Flemish, Vlaamsch Nationaal Verbond (Flemish National Union), and the Wallonie, Christus Rex, (Rexist Party). Both organizations had para military, labour, and youth sections similar to the NSDAP. In September 1940 Flemish Ward Hermans and René Lagrou formed a private enterprise corps modeled after the Allgemeine SS, entitled, "Algemeene Schutsscharen Vlaanderen, (General SS Flanders). In October 1942 Himmler accepted the Algemeene Schutsscharen Vlaanderen as an official SS formation and renamed it, Germaansche SS in Vlaanderen, (Germanic SS in Flanders). As with its German counterpart the Germaansche SS in Vlaanderen established a Sponsoring/Patron Members, organization for all Germanic Flemish male and female personnel who agreed to make a voluntary monthly contribution to the SS treasury in order to strengthen the financial position of the SS and to expand its influence in civilian life. Again as with their German 
counterparts the Germaansche SS in Vlaanderen sponsoring members were issued with a monthly dues book and an identifying lapel pin. 

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 15mm tall, 21mm wide, horizontal diamond shaped, die struck alloy construction Flemish SS sponsoring members lapel pin with black enamel work and a silver wash. The pin features a black enamel base with a fine silver, outer border stripe encompassing central, flush, silver SS runes flanked by the silver initials, "B", and "L", indicating, Beschermende Leden, (SS Sponsoring/Patron Members). The black enamel has a small chip the the center. The reverse has a soldered button hole attachment device which is well marked with the impressed manufacturers name and location, "L. Zoll Antw.", (Antwerp). Scarce Belgian Flemish SS Sponsoring/Patron Members lapel pin.
