S007294 LAH MEMBER'S DOG TAG. (Erkennungsmarken)

BACKGROUND: On mobilization of the German Armed Forces in August 1939 all personnel were issued an identification tag to be worn on a cord around the neck. Following the outbreak of WWII all new recruits were issued a dog tag on their registration for military service. If killed or wounded half of the dog tag would stay attached to the individual and the other half would be sent to the appropriate administrative offices for processing. The SS basically followed the same system as the army and new recruits were issued their dog tags when he was assigned to his training unit. The SS VT, SS Verfügungstruppe, (SS Special Purpose Troops), had originally formed its first units in March 1933 but it wasn’t until September 24TH 1934 the official creation of the SS VT was announced. The SS VT were to be the nucleus of the Waffen SS and on April 22ND 1941 the term SS VT was no longer permitted and the designation Waffen SS became official. Of Note: The 1.SS Panzer Division LSSAH, (Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler), the premier unit of the Waffen SS, had evolved from the Stabswache (Headquarter Guards), that were originally formed in March 1923. From its original inception it served under numerous designations until the tenth anniversary of the failed Beer Hall Putsch on the night of November 8TH/9TH 1933 when Hitler bestowed them with the honor title, Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler, (Life Regiment Adolf Hitler). Of Note: The LSSAH underwent further expansions and designation until October 22ND 1943 when it received its final designation as 1.SS Panzer Division LSSAH, (Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler).

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Horizontally oval, stamped zinc alloy construction identification tag. Tag has been snapped into two. Roster number, "1135".
