S000494 SS/SD "Sturmmann" SERVICE TUNIC. (Dienstrock)

BACKGROUND: The SS-Sicherheits Dienst, (SS Security Service), was instituted in June 1931 as the German national counter-espionage agency and was entrusted with control of internal national security under the auspices of the Sicherheitsdienst des Reichsführer-SS, (Security Service of the National Leader of the SS). SS and SD uniforms followed the same basic designs and evolved from the early "traditional" brown shirt uniform, to the black and earth grey service uniforms in 1932 to the first field-grey uniforms in 1935.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: During World War II the Germans occupied Norway. In 1940, they converted Victoria Terrace into the headquarters for their Gestapo (Secret State Police) and Sicherheitsdienst (State Security for intelligence and covert operations). In 1942, the British tried unsuccessfully to destroy Victoria Terrasse in an aerial bombing called the Oslo Mosquito Raid. The building now serves as the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Vendor reports that this tunic was removed from the SD headquaters in Olso in 1945. It was found in stripped condition with no insignia. The previous owner has had original SD insignia restored to it. The tunic is an issue type (M43) that has been period privately tailored into its current configuration in 1943/44. Feldgrau wool construction tunic features a vertical, four button front (originally 5, but one removed to give it the open collar format). Also added at that time was the dark green collar and French style cuffs. Rbnr # and size marked. Nice original SD diamond, arm eagle, collar tabs, KVK2 ribbon and should boards have been restored to the tunic. Tunic is roughly a size 34/36" chest. Very interesting historical piece.
