N063066 NSDStB DECK OF "SKAT" PLAYING CARDS. (Spielkarten in Büsche)
BACKGROUND: The NSDStB, National Socialist Deutscher Studentenbund, (National Socialist German Students League), was established in February 1926 at the University of Munich to supply the appropriate political leadership to the student bodies of the Germany Universities. In July 1928 leadership of the Studentenbund was taken over by Reichsjugendführer Baldur von Schirach who organized the membership along military lines. Originally personnel had to be an NSDAP member to enroll in the Studentenbund but this requirement was withdrawn in 1929. Skat, the most popular German card game, evolved from the earlier, Schafskopf, (Sheep's head), card game which is at least two hundred and fifty years old. The game of Skat requires a deck of thirty-two cards as opposed to the standard fifty-two card deck. Of Note: Although referred to as a "Skat" deck of cards other card games also utilize only thirty-two cards including, Piquet, Escarte and Euchre.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Nice deck of unissued Skat playing cards with original NSDStB wrapper. Wrapper read "Geschenk der Gaustudentenführung Baden".
