N062278 DEUTSCHES REICHSBAHN PERSONNEL'S SERVICE TUNIC.
BACKGROUND: The importance of the German railway system was well appreciated by the Allies at the close of WWI, and the armistice signed at Compiègne on November 11TH 1918 included thirty-five clauses of which clause #7 demand five thousand railway locomotives and fifty thousand rail wagons from Germany to be delivered to the Allies. The Treaty of Versailles, signed in June 1919, also realized the potential of an efficient railway system and articles of the Treaty included total demilitarization and decentralizing of all German railways which resulted in the breakdown of a national German railway system leaving it in a state of disarray as the individual States became responsible for their own rail traffic. After Hitler’s accession to power in 1933 he immediately began a restructuring of the national railway system and by early 1937 had succeeded in achieving a centralized efficient National Railway. With this restructuring new uniforms and insignia were introduced for railway personnel circa 1933.
