BACKGROUND:
The FAD, "Freiwillingen Arbeitsdienst" (Volunteer Labor-service), was formed in 1929 by the veterans’ association "Der Stahlhelm." It was to later become, along with the NSDAP-created AAD, "Anhalt Arbeitsdienst" (Anhalt Labor-service), the basis of the NSAD, "Nationalsozialist Arbeitsdienst" (National-socialist Labor-service), formed in 1933. The NSAD was re-designated the RAD, "Reichs Arbeitsdienst" (National Labor-service), in June of 1935. In July of the same year RAD service became compulsory, with all German citizens between 19 and 25 years of age required to enlist for a six month term.
