N049376 DRK EM'S OVERSEAS CAP. (DRK Feldmütze)

BACKGROUND: The DRK, Deutsches Rotes Kreuz (German Red Cross), was a voluntary civil assistance organization that was originally instituted in 1864 and was officially acknowledged by the Geneva Convention on July 27TH 1929. On December 9TH 1937 the DRK gained the status of a legally recognized organization by the NSDAP. As with other essential services in Third Reich Germany the DRK came under control of the NSDAP in late 1938 under the auspices of the Ministry of the Interiors Social Welfare Organization. DRK uniforms can be traced back to at least WWI and underwent minor modifications until August 6TH 1935 when major modifications were enacted including the introduction of the national eagle emblem with swastika. Further regulations in January 1938 dictated additional minor uniform modifications.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: First pattern, (circa 1935), charcoal grey, wool/rayon blend construction cap with fold down side and back panels with gently sloping, downward scallops to the front and the forward sides. The cap has a black enamel painted, magnetic sheet metal, ventilation grommet to either side just below the crown edge. The front center of the fold down panels has two magnetic sheet metal ornamental buttons with black ribbed rayon coverings intact. The front center of the cap has a machine woven, first pattern DRK eagle as introduced in 1935. The insignia consists of a mid-grey vertically oval base with a machine woven black DRK eagle with a canted black swastika superimposed on its breast and white accents threads. The eagle is clutching a machine woven red cross in its talons. The insignia is neatly machine stitched to the cap. The DRK eagle is superimposed over a pale grey/white inverted "V" soutache. The soutache has been applied beneath the fold down panels in the correct manner with two small puncture holes near the bottom edge of the cap. The soutache is machine stitched in place. The interior of the cap is fully lined in ribbed blue cotton twill. Roughly a size 55. Original owners name is handwritten to the interior of the cap. Super nice original.     (Ex Philippe Gillain Collection)
