N048689 SA MILITARY SPORTS BADGE FOR WAR WOUNDED. (Wehrabzeichen für Kriegsverseherte)
BACKGROUND: Promoted as the last SA-Stabschef after the death of Viktor Lutze on May 2ND 1943, Wilhelm Schepmann saw the need to maintain the physical and mental well being of those who had been wounded in the course of the war. As a result Schepmann introduced the SA Military Sports Badge for War Wounded on October 8TH 1943. Design of the award was closely based on the SA Military Sports Badge. Award of the badge was open to all German males over the age of eighteen who had been wounded or disabled as a result of war actions. Criteria varied and was dependent on the seriousness of the wound or disability of the individual attempting to win the award.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Die struck, solid backed, alloy award with a bronze wash. Badge is in the form of a slightly vertical, oval oak-leaf wreath encompassing an upward pointing broad sword with a horizontal wolfsangle on its grip, which is superimposed on a central, canted swastika. Detailing includes veins to the oak-leaves, horizontal ribbing to the sword grip, vertical ribbing to the wolfangle, raised lip to outside edges of the swastika arms and cut-outs to the interior of the wreath and swastika arms. Complete with original hinge, pin and catch assembly (Catch is pushed in, in the closed position). Reverse is well marked with embossed RZM manufactures code, "M1/100" indicating manufacture by Werner Redo, Saarlautern.
