N048589 S.A. SPORTS BADGE IN GOLD. (Sportabzeichen)

BACKGROUND: Instituted by Ernst Rohm in November 1933, for award to S.A. and S.S. members only. In February 1935 it gained official status, the silver and gold versions were introduced, and the badge could then be awarded to the German public.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: This die struck tombac badge takes the form of a Roman broad sword superimposed over a mobile swastika encompassed by a circular oak-leaf wreath. To its reverse is the first pattern inscription (1934-35) "Eigentum D.[es] Chefs D.[es] Ausbildungswesens" (Property of-the Head of Physical-conditioning). "Bonner Kunstabz." and "Bedarf Bonn a/RH" are also embossed to the reverse, as is the stamped serial number "131302." Its complete pin, soldered hinge and catch assembly are intact. Very scarce maker.
