BACKGROUND: The S.A. sports badge was instituted by Ernst Rohm in November 1933, for award to S.A. and S.S. members only. In February 1935 it gained official status, the silver and gold versions were introduced, and the badge could then be awarded to the German public.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: The badge takes the form of a Roman broad sword superimposed over a mobile swastika and encompassed by a circular oak-leaf wreath. This miniature, bronze lapel version is 16mm tall and 12mm wide. From the center of its reverse extends a 40mm rifled pin.
