N044191 CIVILIAN MEMBER CONSTRUCTION UNIT BADGE.

BACKGROUND: The Luftwaffe pattern national eagle was originally introduced for wear by Fliegerschaft, (Pilot Base), personnel of the DLV, Deutscher Luftsportsverband, (German Air Sports Association), the clandestine, civilian, forerunner of the Luftwaffe on August 18TH 1934 and was officially adopted for wear by all Luftwaffe personnel on March 1ST 1935. The original first pattern national eagle was utilized until a, slightly modified, second pattern national eagle was introduced in late 1936 or early 1937. Regulations dictated that the national eagle was to be worn on almost all headgear and on the right breast of almost all uniforms with a few minor exceptions. The German armed forces, including the Luftwaffe utilized numerous civilian personnel in a wide variety of functions that came under the command of the "RLM", Reichsluftfahrtministerium, (National Aviation Ministry). One group of these civilian personnel were the construction units manned by civilians with specific expertise or construction qualifications. These personnel were classed as Wehrmacht Gefolge, (Armed Forces Retinue), and were designated as either "Employees" or "Members", although the distinction between the two is unclear. Although actively employed by the Armed Forces these personnel still retained their civilian status. The Luftwaffe construction unit personnel were outfitted with Luftwaffe style uniforms with two pieces of distinct insignia with one to be worn on the lower left sleeve and the other on the right breast of the uniform.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Printed construction 100mm x 125mm. Stylized eagles head in profile flanked by stylized Gothic letters, "WG", indicating, Werhmacht Gefolge, (Armed Forces Retinue). "L. Bau.", indicating Air Force Construction. Scarce.
