BACKGROUND: The FAD, Freiwillingen Arbeitsdienst, (Volunteer Labor Service), formed in 1929, can be considered an early forerunner of the RAD Reichsarbeitsdienst (National Labour Service). In 1933 the FAD was consolidated into the NSAD, Nationalsozialist Arbeitsdienst, (National Socialist Labor Service) which was re-designated RAD in June 1935.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A 16mm x 20mm badge with a 50mm rifled pin attached to the reverse. Reverse well marked embossed script, "Ges. Gesch.", indicating, Gesetzlich Geschützt (Protected by Law).
