N022888 SA SPORTS BADGE IN BRONZE. (Sportabzeichen)

BACKGROUND: Instituted by Ernst Rohm in November 1933, for award to SA and SS members only. In February 1935 it gained official status, the silver and gold versions were introduced, and the badge could then be awarded to the German public.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: This die struck metal badge, with a bronze wash, takes the form of a Roman broad sword superimposed over a mobile swastika encompassed by a circular oak-leaf wreath. To its reverse is the third pattern inscription (1939-44) "Eigentum der Obersten SA.-Führung" (Property of-the Supreme SA.-Command). "R. Sieper & Söhne" and "Lüdenscheid" are also embossed to the reverse. Its complete flat pin, soldered hinge and catch assembly are intact. One of the less common makers.
