N019490 FAD MEMBER’S PIN. (FAD Mitgliednadel)

BACKGROUND: The FAD, Freiwillingen Arbeitsdienst, (Volunteer Labor Service), formed in 1929, can be considered an early forerunner of the RAD Reichsarbeitsdienst (National Labour Service). In 1933 the FAD was consolidated into the NSAD, Nationalsozialist Arbeitsdienst, (National Socialist Labor Service) which was re-designated RAD in June 1935.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Pre-1935 FAD members lapel badge for wear on civilian clothes. 23mm diameter, die struck tombac and enamelled badge features a translucent red outer border with silver script, "Freiwillingen Arbeitsdienst", encompassing a white field with black, square headed spade flanked by sheafs of wheat with silver accent lines. Enamel work fully intact. Pebbled field is visible below the translucent red enamel. Original silver wash to script, border trim and accent lines has reverted to the base metal. Pin back device with circular base plate soldered to reverse. Reverse well marked embossed script, "Ges. Gesch.", indicating, Gesetzlich Geschützt (Protected by Law). Scarce.
