BACKGROUND: Originally from 1933 to 1936 the HJ lanyard utilized different colors for the various German states. In 1936 this system was simplified so the same color combinations would represent the same ranks in all of the German states. The lanyards where worn on the wearers left, being buttoned to the top left pocket flap and extended to under the left shoulder strap. The same lanyard was also used in the DJ for the same rank positions.
