N015894 DIPLOMAT/GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL'S DAGGER
SCABBARD.
BACKGROUND: When Hitler became Chancellor in 1933, he appointed Joachim
von Ribbentrop as an advisor on foreign affairs. Ribbentrop successfully
negotiated the Anglo German naval agreement in June 1935, the anti Comintern
Pact with Japan in November 1936 and Italy in November 1937. In February 1938 he
was appointed as Germany Minister of Foreign Affairs. Under Ribbentrop’s
direction the Ministry went through structural changes that included the
creation of two separate departments; the Diplomatic department for external
affairs and the Government Official’s department for internal affairs. Along
with these changes new uniforms and insignia were developed and the dress dagger
was introduced and first worn in May 1938 on a state visit to Rome.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Nickel/silver plated magnetic sheet metal scabbard
