N012494 60TH PANZER GRENADIER DIVISION "FELDHERRNHALLE" OFFICER’S SHOULDER STRAP CYPHER. (Abzeichen für Schulterklappen)
BACKGROUND: The Feldherrnhalle, (Hall of Generals/Heroes), in Munich was the site of the unsuccessful 1923 Beer Hall Putsch in which the NSDAP, Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, (National Socialist German Worker’s Party) attempted to seize governmental power and in which sixteen NSDAP members were killed by the police. After the NSDAP gained power the Feldherrnhalle became a national shrine for the sixteen "assassinated martyrs". The SA, Sturmabteilung, (Storm/Assault Detachment), was originally formed in the August 1921 as a protective guard unit for the political leaders of the fledgling NSDAP, and as with the NSDAP the SA was structure along para military lines. The SA recruited most of its personnel from the ranks of the various Freikorps groups composed mainly of disgruntled ex soldiers and was first utilized at a NSDAP meeting in Munich in November 1921. In late 1934 the SA Stabchef Viktor Lutze established the SA Wachstandarte, (SA Guard Regiment), to guard the NSDAP buildings primarily in Berlin and Munich and were accorded the honor title Feldherrnhalle. Requirements for entry into the SA Wachstandarte Feldherrnhalle dictated that personnel must have at least six months prior service in an SA unit or at least a years service in the Hitler Youth. Shortly after its formation personnel serving with the SA Wachstandarte Feldherrnhalle were bestowed a distinctive identifying cufftitle and on July 1ST 1943 unique shoulder board/strap cyphers were also introduced. Of Note: On its introduction the unique shoulder board/strap cyphers was also bestowed to personnel serving with 60TH Panzer Grenadier Division Feldherrnhalle and eventually personnel serving with the PanzerKorps Feldherrnhalle which consisted of the Panzer Divisions Feldherrnhalle 1 and 2. Of Note: Regulations decreed that the unit designation shoulder board/strap cyphers were embroidered in the branch of service color for EM’s and Junior NCO’s, in silvered metal for Senior NCO’s and in gilted metal for Officer’s ranks.
