N006896 DAF BELT & BELT BUCKLE. (Koppleschloß)
BACKGROUND: Free Trade Unions in Germany were dissolved when the Nazis came to power in 1933, their members being absorbed into the newly created "Deutsche Arbeitsfront" (German Labor front). The D.A.F. was originally a sub section of the N.S.D.A.P., but became an affiliated organization by 1936, and was the largest of all of the various Nazi organizations. The stated aims of the D.A.F. were to create a national community of German professional and manual laborers, and to educate them in National Socialist principles. Membership was voluntary, but most workers chose to join to take advantage of the entertainment, sport, and travel opportunities provided by the attached KdF, "Kraft durch Freude" (Strength through Joy), welfare organization. The Volkswagen, for example, was a KdF project designed to provide German workers with a reliable and inexpensive vehicle, initially being called the "KdF Wagen."
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Aluminum buckle, introduced in 1936 and worn by all ranks of the "Werkschar" (Work troop[s]), upon whose plain field is embossed the D.A.F. logo of a fourteen toothed cog surround to a mobile swastika, with rivets to each of its corners. To its reverse is a vertical metal post with two horizontal prongs to it, and a raised aluminum bar for the belt catch, beneath which is embossed an RZM logo and "M4/44," for Paul Cramer & Co. of Lüdenscheid. Comes with a decent 100cm long leather belt complete with its original size adjustment tab.
