Hird Muster, October 16–17, 1943 – Badge
On the weekend of October 16–17, 1943, Nasjonal Samling (NS) organized a large, nationwide muster of the Hird in Oslo.
This was one of the major, propaganda-driven rallies held during the occupation for the Hird—the NS’s paramilitary force and Vidkun Quisling’s bodyguard unit.
Key events during this muster included:
• Commemorative ceremony at the Royal Palace Square (Slottsplassen): On Saturday morning (October 16), a solemn ceremony was held at the Royal Palace Square in Oslo to honor fallen "front fighters" (Norwegian volunteers who fought for Germany on the Eastern Front).
• March-up at University Square (Universitetsplassen): On Sunday, October 17, Hird units marched to University Square in central Oslo. This was one of the NS regime’s standard venues for major salutation and propaganda parades.
• Quisling’s speech: Vidkun Quisling delivered one of his major speeches to the assembled Hird units.
The October 1943 muster took place at a time when the Hird had recently been formally incorporated into the national defense forces (August 1943), and members were facing intense propaganda pressure to increase mobilization and support for the occupying power.
“In total, there were approximately 8,000 active members of the Hird when including all its sub-organizations. However, following the introduction of mandatory membership in 1943, the number of Hird members rose to around 20,000, though this figure included a large number of inactive members. Vidkun Quisling himself was the supreme leader of the Hird, although the organization also had various leaders holding the title that eventually became *Rikshirdsjef* (National Hird Leader).”
On November 1 and 2, 1941, Nasjonal Samling (NS) held a major Hird rally in Oslo – Hird Badge
• March-past at Universitetsplassen: On Saturday, November 1, 1941, the Hird held a large march-past at Universitetsplassen (University Square) in Oslo, attended by NS leader Vidkun Quisling and Hird Chief of Staff Orvar Sæther.
• Oath-taking at the Colosseum Cinema: Over 3,000 Hird members gathered at the Colosseum Cinema, where they swore a solemn and emotionally charged oath of unwavering obedience unto death to Vidkun Quisling.
• Political background: The rally took place during a period when Hird membership had just been made mandatory for male members of Nasjonal Samling, as part of the Nazification and militarization of occupied Norway.
