In March 1919 Benito Mussolini established the, Fascio di Combattimento, (Union of Combatants), political party in Milan and fascism was born in Italy and following the infamous "March on Rome", on October 28TH 1922 Mussolini became the supreme leader of the country. On May 22ND 1939 Mussolini’s Italy and Hitler’s Germany signed the "Pact of Steel" linking their countries destinies together in the upcoming war. As with the other nations Italy came to use a variety of anti-personnel and anti-vehicles mines during the war.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: An approximately, 5 1/8" tall by 2 3/4" diameter, green painted, 3/4 round, steel cylinder, designed to be mounted on a tree. The mine consists of an outer shell, with a 1 3/4" cap and an inner brass insert which holds the detonation mechanism. The back of the cylinder is flat with six 1/2" spikes, three to each edge, that could be jammed into a wood surface. On the top, in the center, is a vertically ribbed, 1" diameter, threaded brass knob with a horizontal groove and retaining plate, through which a firing pin is inserted. The knob holds the cap in place. The retaining plate has an oblong hole through which a firing pin is inserted and a ring at one end to attach a trip wire to. Part way down the firing pin is an indented ring which the retaining plate slides into to arm the mine. To the front of the top there is a small guide ring welded in place through which the trip wires would be threaded. At the top there is wrap around cover, 6 3/4" by 1 1/4", with a hinge at one end and held closed by a pin at the other. Stamped to the center of the cover is "B4." Behind the cover are four small chambers with small wood spools of twine that would have been used for trip wires. To one side, about halfway down, is a, 2 1/4" by 1/2" diameter, keyed brass safety insert, with a ribbed knob that keeps the firing pin from hitting the charge. On the very bottom is a 1 1/4" diameter threaded brass plug which is attached by a chain to a ring welded to the side. The plug treads into the chamber into which the detonating charge would be inserted. A hole can be seen in the top of the chamber for the firing pin. There are two larger rings, with rings though them, welded on the side, with corresponding hooks welded on the opposite side which were used for tying the mine to a tree. There is a piece of heavy twine, with a knotted end, threaded through the upper ring. Between the outer wall and inner wall is a space that has been filled with two different diameter steel slugs, 3/4" by 1/4" and 3/8" by 1/4". It retains about 80% of its original paint with some areas of oxidization and age soiling to its brass pieces.
