C11052 FRENCH M1886/93/16 BAYONET.

A bayonet with a brass hilt and a cruciform, 13 1/2" blade, with its original leather scabbard and integral frog. The bayonet’s brass hilt has, alongside the top of its pommel, a stamp in the form of a diamond, within which is what appears to be the letter "G." What comprises its metal cross guard is a circular muzzle guide, beneath and to the left of which is the movable stud which would lock the bayonet to the rifle along the stud guide, and the extension beneath that having "A 94934" stamped to its underside. The stud still functions perfectly. The blade, which was shortened from its 20 1/2" length as it was issued in 1916, to its present length in 1935, has an encircled "B," underneath of which is an encircled "G," stamped along the left side of its base. Both the blade and cross guard are heavily surface spotted, and the brass hilt has numerous surface scratches to it. The dark brown, tapering leather scabbard has a vertical, sewn seam to its reverse, and it is riveted to its integral frog at its top. The frog, in the same color and material, is 2 1/8" wide where it is riveted to the scabbard, scallops inwards as it rises, scallops outwards near where a horizontal retaining strap, with a metal stud to one end and a corresponding stud hole to the other, is riveted, and is 1 3/4" wide at its top, where it folds back upon itself and is riveted to form a belt loop. All of the rivets are of copper. A very faint impression may be seen beneath the retaining strap, which appears to include the letter "W." "3803" is impressed to the back of the frog, partially obscuring "8563" and "942." All of the leather has stiffened with age, and exhibits moderate to heavy chafe wear and surface scratching. The base of the scabbard is more significantly worn, with a tear to its front, and the frog has noticeable cracking near its retaining strap.
