BACKGROUND: At the beginning of the war the 1st Air Force had the responsibility of defending the entire eastern seaboard of the U.S. but in late 1942 their mission was changed to training combat air crews for overseas deployment. Of Note: Orange and blue were the colors of the Army Air Force and the star was the symbol that was used to mark aircraft in the early stages of the war.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A machine embroidered, oval patch, about 6cm x 6.5cm with a silver-white "1" between orange wings (in the open style) above a silver-white five pointed star with a red circular center all on a blue background. Removed from a uniform.
