C062174 U.S. M-1872 HOFFMAN SWIVEL HOLSTER.
These holsters were not popular with Troopers as the swivel rotates 180 degrees which caused the pistol to fall out. One Colt S.A.A. 1873 .45 caliber is known to have been lost due to this design. The holster shows a faint "U.S." stamp on the flap. All of the stitching is tight and most of the leather finish remains. Only 12 or so Hoffman 1872 pattern holsters exist out of the 1, 369 that were converted at the Water &Liet Arsenel. Most of these holsters were used at the outer posts and Custer’s 7th was known to have been issued 1872 patterns for the Black Hills Expedition in 1874.
