BACKGROUND: This order of chivalry was established by King George V in 1917 to which there are five classes in civil and military divisions, including the "Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire."

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: This 1917-1935 pattern, civilian woman’s breast badge has a purple silk bow from which a cross, surmounted by the Kings Crown is suspended from a ring. The original "Royal Mint" hinge case is marked "M.B.E. in gilt letters to the lid and measures approximately 14.5cm 13.5cm x 2.5cm with a push button release to the front and is lined in white silk and velvet.
