BACKGROUND: Every infantry or armored regiment had its own insignia. Cap badges were usually made of white metal, brass, copper or bi-metal. Most commonly brass and white metal were used. Officers were sometimes known to wear private purchase cap badges made of silver or silver bullion. The Royal Canadian Dragoons (RCD) is an armoured regiment that since its inception on 21 December 1883 has seen continuous service. It was first known as the Cavalry School Corps and was officially renamed the Royal Canadian Dragoons on 24 may 1893.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A brass stamped cap badge, 5cm x 3cm, of a springbok (a small antelope) bounding over a scroll embossed with the inscription "Royal Canadian Dragoons." The reverse is a mirror image of the obverse which has double lugs. Manufacture marked.
