BACKGROUND: The British Royal Flying Corps (RFC) was founded in May of 1912 and by the end of the year had one squadron of airships and three of aircraft with each squadron consisting of twelve machines. By May 1915, the Royal Flying Corps had 166 aircraft and by the time of the Battle of the Somme in July of 1916 the RFC had expanded to twenty seven squadrons (421 aircraft). On April 1, 1918 the the Royal Flying Corp (RFC) and the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) were amalgamated and the Royal Air Force officially came into existence. By the end of the war the RAF operated 4,000 combat aircraft and employed 114,000 people.
