C045991 M1926 ROYAL DUTCH1st LIEUTENANT'S OVERCOAT.
A field green-grey wool, with two rows of seven brass button closure and a lay down collar. All of the brass 22mm buttons are embossed with a crowned rampant lion with a sword in one hand and seven arrows, representing the seven provinces, in the other. Two brass hooks, with corresponding mates, are to the inside of the collar. Two slash pockets with flaps are situated just to or below the hips. Two rank stars are sewn onto the tips of each collar (top and bottom so that the rank can be seen when the collar is stood up) that denote the rank of 1st Lieutenant. The inside is fully lined in a grey cotton that has sewn into the right pocket a white identification tag with a partially visible handwritten name "Melick" and "Juli 1939". A "half belt" is attached to the reverse by brass buttons identical to those on the front. A slash pocket is present to the left seam (behind the flap pocket) that allows access to pockets to the inside garments. The chest measures approximately 36". Lightly used and aged overcoat. Of Note: The overcoat was purchased by a "dienstplichtig" or conscripted/drafted reserve officer named F.A.W.H. van Melick whose records can be found at the Dutch Military Archives (Staat van Dienst). He can also be found in the "Naam en Ranglijst" (Name and Rank List) of the Royal Dutch Army of 1940; Melick F.A.W.H. van (1e Lt.) Geb. 1911, 2RI (Limburg). Reserve 2e Lieutant Jan. 1, 1937 and Reserve 1e Lieutenant Jan. 1, 1940. In 1940, van Melick served as a Reserve 1st Lieutenant attached to the 1st Mitrailleurcompagnie (Machine Gun Company) of the 2nd Division (MCI-2RI) under rersever Captian P.F. J. Vaessen. On May 11, 1940, his unit was stationed on the front line, just east of Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, directly facing I.R. 456, attched to the 256th Infantry Division, 18th Army of the German Wehrmacht. 1st Lt. F. Van Melick survived the war years in the Netherlands under German occupation. Post war, he became a well respected Engineer.
