C044560 U.S. 11TH AIRBORNE DIVISION SHOULDER FLASH.

BACKGROUND: Airborne forces were created to allow the dropping of soldiers and equipment behind enemy lines and to be quickly deployed where needed. Italy carried out the first true paratroop drop in November of 1927. After the start of WWII the Allies formed five US Airborne Divisions, the US 11th Airborne Division, 13th Airborne Division, 17th Airborne Division, 82nd Airborne Division, and 101st Airborne Division and two British, the 1st Airborne Division and 6th Airborne Division.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A machine embroidered shield shaped patch, about 3 3/4" by 2 3/8", which has on a blue background, a pair of white wings to the top of a white bordered red circle with a white "11" to its center. To the top is a blue arch with the inscription "Airborne".
