C042692 BRITISH/COMMONWEALTH CASED ITALY STAR.

BACKGROUND: There were eight campaign stars instituted for WW2 with the maximum of five allowed to be worn at one time. There were a number of bars issued for the stars but a maximum of one bar could be worn per star. The Italy Star was awarded for service in Sicily or Italy between 11 June 1943 and 8 May 1945 and as the Italy Star was always awarded in addition to other stars no bars were ever instituted for it.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: The medal takes the form of a, bronze colored, six-pointed tombac star, about 4cm from point to point, whose uppermost point features a suspension loop. To its slightly domed, obverse center is the stylized Royal Cypher "GRI," with "VI" beneath it, for King George the Sixth, surmounted by a King’s crown and with "The Italy Star" scrolled around it. Its reverse is featureless. The medal has a ring fed through its suspension loop, with a ribbed ribbon of red, white and green representing the national colours of Italy. Included is an original cardboard issued box with "Italy Star" stamped to the lid. Original tissue paper included.
