C040667 U.S. M1872 CAVALRY CAP INSIGNIA.

In 1851 a new system of branch-of-service devices was inaugurated which included a crossed-sabers insignia for Dragoons. Originally prescribed only for officers, in 1858 its wear was extended to enlisted men, and then to cavalry. In 1861 all mounted units were designated as cavalry and wore this insignia until 1872. Stamped brass, U.S. regulation crossed cavalry sabers, sheathed and with their edges upwards. Three of the original four wire mounting loops soldered to its hollow-back reverse are intact.
