C040462 "C.A.D.C." CAP BADGE.
BACKGROUND: The Canadian Army Dental Corps is entrusted to provide high quality, functional dental fitness, at home and abroad to members of the Canadian Forces. Their history can be traced back to the Boer War when the number of soldiers with dental emergencies indicated a great need for the dental service. The Canadian Dental Association pressed the government to form a Regular Army Dental Staff as a distinct branch of the medical service to which, in 1904, 18 Dental Surgeons were established. During WWI, many recruits were rejected for dental reasons and because there were only 26 dentists, they could not cope with the demand. This lead to asking for civilian dentist volunteers. During WWII, dental records were being used for forensic purposes (identifying war casualties.)
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: This version of gilt metal alloy badge came into use in 1929. It features the letters "C.A.D.C." central to the badge with oak leaves to the outside. A Kings Crown intersects at the top. The badge measures approximately 3cm x 4cm with two lugs on the back. The reverse is a mirror image of the front. Nice example.
