C040285 U.S. "SONS IN SERVICE" FLAG.
BACKGROUND: The Sons in Service flag was used during both world wars. It was vertically hung in the window by a family who had a member of their family in active service. For each member of the family who was in active service , an additional blue star was added. If a gold star was covering the blue, this indicated that the family member was wounded in action or had suffered a death. Organizations and corporations extended this practice for each of their members or employees who were in active service as well. Sometimes these flags were flown outside, but often they were hung inside the building.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A red silk/rayon printed flag with a white center with a blue five pointed star to the center. The flag is suspended by a white painted copper bar with a loop. The painted central design has some cracking to the paint and there is some fraying to the bottom edge. The single sided flag measures approximately 12.5cm x 19.5cm.
