BACKGROUND: Instituted in 1932 for any members of the U.S. Armed Forces wounded or killed in combat. The medal could be awarded in conjunction with a Bronze Oak Leaf, Silver Oak Leaf, Silver Star or Gold Star depending on the number of wounds received.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: High quality die-struck medal with gilt wash and enamel work in purple. To its front is an image of George Washington with the script "FOR MILITARY MERIT" to the reverse. Complete with original 35mm wide white and purple ribbon with original pin back device.
