C036872 ARGYLL AND SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS GLENGARRY.
BACKGROUND
: The Glengarry’s origins may be traced to Alasdair MacDonell (1771-1828) of Glengarry, Scotland, and was adopted by the British Infantry in 1868, and the Canadian militia in the 1870s. It was worn on dress occasions, by traditionally Scottish Infantry Regiments, during both world wars. Mobilized at the beginning of the war, the Seaforth Highlanders served in Italy from 1943 to 1945 (as part of the 2nd Infantry Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division), and in North West Europe from March of 1945 until the end of hostilities.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A black woven wool "wedge" cap has a red wool Touri (pom-pom) to its crown, black rayon edging along its base, and approximately 29cm long, dual black rayon ribbons, with swallow-tail cut ends, extend from its reverse. A 3cm tall diced band is along its sides, in white, red and black, over the left front of which is fixed a black rayon rosette. A stamped, white metal alloy badge consisting of a wreath of thistle encompassing a circle with "Argyll and Sutherland" that is surmounted by a coronet. A profile of a boars head and a rampant lion are present to the center of the circle. The interior is fully lined. There are some small moth holes to the same side as the badge and one of the ribbons has a small tear along its seam.
