C03554 U.S. CAVALRY STIRRUP.
A bent wood stirrup, most likely of hickory or oak, unto which is riveted a thick, blackened harness leather hood. A wooden cross-piece is to the top of the stirrup, which its suspension strap would have wrapped around. What appears to be "Rock," "Land Arsenal," and a "1903" date is impressed to the bottom of the stirrup. A repetition of the aforementioned appears to be impressed to the right side of the hood. The leather hood exhibits significant cracking throughout, with a noticeable tear to its top right, but it is still supple, evidently having been treated. The wooden stirrup itself exhibits light cracking to its bends, but is still structurally intact. Of Note: This was probably part of a "McClellan" saddle, whose leather stirrup hoods were one of its distinctive features, and which was the regulation U.S. cavalry saddle from its adoption in 1859 until the Second World War.
