C03454 U.S. CAVALRY STIRRUP.

A bent wood stirrup, most likely of hickory or oak, unto which is riveted a thick, harness leather hood. A wooden cross-piece is to the top of the stirrup, which its suspension strap would have wrapped around. An indiscernible maker’s name (which may be "Spalding"), a "1917" date, and what appears to be "K.P." is impressed to the bottom of the stirrup. "US," within a horizontal oval, is impressed to the front of the hood. The leather hood has numerous surface scratches to it, and cracking along its base, but it is still supple, evidently having been treated. The wooden stirrup itself exhibits noticeable cracking to its bends, but is still structurally intact. Of Note: This was probably part of a "McClellan" saddle, whose leather stirrup hoods were one of its distinctive features, and which was the regulation U.S. cavalry saddle from its adoption in 1859 until the Second World War.
