C032589 BRITISH/COMMONWEALTH LIEUTENANT'S DRILL SLIP ON SHOULDER STRAPS.

BACKGROUND: The rank insignia used by officers in the British and commonwealth forces during the second world war consisted of four pieces of insignia used in combinations to create the rank designations. These were the crown, star or pip, a crossed saber and baton and crossed batons. During the early years of the war and a few years before khaki stars were sewn onto coloured backing but later in the war the stars were embroidered directly on the coloured backing. The coloured backing represented the unit and was the same colour as regimental shoulder flashes.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A pair of khaki cotton shoulder strap slides made measuring approximately 6 cm x 11cm with a single seam to the reverse. Sewn onto the slide are two rank stars (Pips) which are embroidered on blue backings which indicates the rank of Lieutenant serving with the Canadian Chaplain Service.
