C030893 USAAF AIRCRAFT OBSERVER WINGS.

BACKGROUND: During World War II the Army Air Forces issued a large variety of wings and badges to signify standings and qualifications. The badges were commonly available in a standard 3" (7.5cm) wide size for use on tunics and a 2" (5cm) wide size for use on shirts. The 2" size became known as "sweetheart" wings as they were often sent home to loved ones. Some soldiers had special pins made specifically for sweethearts.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A single piece construction with a nickel/silver finish to the front. To its reverse is a pair of clutch backs, as well as a "Sterling" marking.
