C030791 IDENTIFIED "John Daniel Grant" 1914-1957 PILOT OFFICER GROUPING.
This extensive, named Pilot’s grouping extends from WWI through to WWII and Post war service. Included are three overseas cap for each time period, a set of Canadian Air Force wings, CAF uniform button, RFC cap badge, RFC sweetheart badges and uniform buttons, RCAF cap badge, two ribbon bars, dog tags, black and white framed photograph, photograph albums with over 310 black and white images. Also included is a framed, George the Sixth discharge document, a training group photograph and a large portrait. There is some documentation available with the grouping in regard to enlistment, training, etc. that is only available to the perspective buyer (as per the consignor’s request as a sign of "respect or his service and memory"). This grouping originated in Atlantic Canada.
1. A first pattern, navy blue/black wool "CAF" cap bears a first pattern, three piece constructed cap badge measures approximately 6cm x 6cm with a central maple leaf with "CAF" to the foreground. Two wings extend from the maple leaf that do not touch the Kings Crown that is mounted to the point of the maple leaf. The top of the crown is filled with a red ribbed silk. A section of black wool is affixed to the reverse which is visible from the front. The badge is affixed to the cap via lugs and cotter pin. The cap has a velvet sweatband and is lined in white silk/rayon that is stitched in a quilted pattern. A manufacture tag for "Muir Cap Limited, Toronto’ "Contractors to the Dominion Government" is present, along with a handwritten name "J.D. Grant". The original "CAF" buttons are to the front of the cap!!!

The RCAF overseas cap is of dark blue wool construction with a two piece, brass cap badge, features fold-down sides and back panels, held in place with small blackened steel hooks on each side of the crown, scalloping towards where it is buttoned in the front. Behind the front double button closure is a small fold-down visor. Both of the two small brass buttons are embossed with a King’s crown over an albatross in flight. Size marked "7 1/8" and bears a manufacture tag for "Muir Cap Regalia Limited" of Toronto Canada. The interior also shows a brown velvet sweatband and is fully lined in a yellow/gold silk/rayon.
3. The third cap is a RCAF "Training" overseas cap of dark blue wool that features fold-down sides and back panels, held in place by hooks, scalloping towards where it is buttoned in the front. Behind the front double button closure is a small fold-down visor. Both of the two small buttons are embossed with a King’s crown over an eagle in flight. A white flash of fabric is tucked behind the visor to represent airmen who were under training. An two piece RCAF cap badge is affixed to the left side of the body showing a Queen’s Crown above an albatross affixed by three posts and caps. The cap is lined with stamping showing a size 71/8.
4. A pair of "CAF" or "Canadian Air Force" wings that measure approximately 82mm long that feature a maple leaf with "CAF" to the center from which a wing extends from each side. The reverse features a navy blue/black backing. A pair of posts with caps, as well as a reinforcement plate are to the reverse. Due to the fragility of the badge, a reinforcement plate was used to attempt to correct the problem. This badge is a Type I that was issued from 1917-1918. A small 2cm diameter "CAF" uniform button is also included that is manufacture marked for "W. Scully, Montreal".
5. The RFC (Royal Flying Corps) stamped brass, cap badge, with stylized "RFC" to the center is surrounded by a wreath and surmounted by a Kings Crown. The reverse is a mirror image of the front with two lugs (bent) present and cotter pin. The badge has a slight convex bend. Also included are a pair of RFC and RAF enamel sweetheart pins, and a RFC brooch. The pins measure approximately 4cm in length, while the brooch is 3cm in diameter. Lastly, there are six brass uniform buttons, 2.5cm and 2cm, in diameter that are all "W. Scully, Montreal" marked. The ribbon bars represent WWI Victory Medal and the War Medal 1914-1918.
6. A padded, two piece RAF/RCAF cap badge with original backing that measures approximately 6.5cm x 6.5cm. There is also a pair of brass RCAF badges with a pair of prongs/tangs to the reverse. A small packet of RCAF match book with matches and set of dog tags with chain is also included.
7. A Pair of photograph albums full of black and white images, a small, framed, black and white image, a 43cm x 53cm, modern framed "George the Sixth" discharge document (31cm x 38cm) that is dated for November 25, 1940 for "John Daniel Grant" "Pilot Officer", a 27cm x 77cm black painted, wooden frame, black and white group picture and a large, 69cm x 91cm, modern wooden gilt frame portrait with a few water stains to the surface.
8. Also from the same Estate & included in the grouping is an Avro 504K windshield screen. 28cm x 14cm glass windshield in a white metal frame that shows yellowing to the glass. The frame measures approximately 33.5cm x 8.5cm with an "Avro" emblem to the middle front. There is a diagonal crack to the glass that measures approximately 20.5cm long. Of Note: The 504k model were originally a two seater planes that had been modified in manufacturing to become one seater fighters with a mounted Lewis Gun. Due to the scarcity of engines the engine compartment was modified so that it could fit a verity of size engines, some from France. They were beefed up with newer, bigger 100 to 110 hp rating engines. They were manufactured between 1917 - 1918 and it was estimated that 4997 were built of this model. Their main duty was for British Home Air Defence against German Raiders and Zeppelins.
