C029891 U.S. WW2 M-1917A1 COMBAT HELMET.

BACKGROUND: The original American M1917 helmet of the First World War, was pretty much a direct copy of the British M1916 helmet. This example, a M1917A1 was the final step in its development. The primary difference between the M1917 and M1917A1 was the introduction of an improved liner system and chinstrap. The M1917A1 was introduced in 1934 and used right up into the early parts of the Second World War until it was replaced by the M1 helmet.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Shell retains almost all of its original factory applied rough textured olive drab paint. A separate rim is crimped along its visor. Light brown, four tongued, leather liner is complete. Each tongue has a single metal grommet for which the liner adjustment sting is to pass. String is complete. Liner band is attached to the top of the helmet by a screw post and nut. The helmet comes complete with its original two piece khaki webbed cloth chinstrap with metal hook and catch attachments, Identical as the example that would be used on its M1 helmet predecessor. About a size 58. All soldiers, sailors and Marines wore these at Pearl Harbor and on Midway island. Nice, untouched example!
