C029392 1930’S-1950’S FRENCH COLONIAL MEDAL.
The Colonial Medal (Médaille Coloniale) is a French decoration created by the "loi de finances" of 26 July 1893 (article 75) to reward "military services in the colonies, resulting from participation in military operations, in a colony or a protectorate." A decree of 6 June 1962 changed the term "colonial" to "overseas." Second type medal, not in silver. The second version of the Colonial Medal was slightly smaller in diameter than the first type. It is still bi-facial (during the Korean War some Colonial Medals were created with a completely blank reverse) It still followed the design created by Georges Lemaire but his initials (script "GL") are no longer present on the reverse. The Mercier maker’s diamond logo is also not present on the oak leaves on the suspension bar, indicating a commercial production medal. These were common because the official issue Mercier-struck medals were often unavailable. Bar Extreme Orient.
