C029193 USAAF A-9 SUMMER FLIGHT HELMET.
BACKGROUND: The designations for American flight helmets were comprised of a letter followed by a number, with the former indicating whether is was for summer (Type "A") or winter (Type "B") use, and the number being the contract sequence
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: An unlined summer flight helmet, constructed from four panels of olive drab canvas, whose edges and interior seams are reinforced with tan cotton. Although the edges originally had tunnel loops with internal drawstrings, allowing the helmet to be drawn tightly around the face and neck, the strings were evidently removed when the helmet was modified - with snap buttons on a webbed strip to the right of the face, and with a brass hook and a snap button on a similar strip to the left side. These snaps and hooks were for the "A-10 Modified," "A-10 Revised," "A-10A" or "A-14" oxygen masks. Extending from the lower right side panel is a 25cm long leather chinstrap with six buckling holes and a padded fur chin section. A corresponding blackened metal single-pronged buckle is sewn on a short tab to the lower point of the right panel. A tag is sewn to the interior of the cap designating it as an "A-9" Medium cap along with contract information and a 1942 date. All straps and hooks intact.
