This order, was the first Soviet medal established during the war and the first to be divided into classes. It was awarded as 1st and 2nd Classes for personal bravery, staunchness and courage for those who fought during the German-Soviet War. The award depicts a five pointed, red enamel star with silver rays extending from the background with a crossed saber and rifle. A golden hammer and sickle sit on a red enamel background that is surrounded by a white enamel ring that has imprinted "Patriotic War." To the reverse is a central threaded post and convex disc. Etched to the reverse is the serial number "661468."
