C024193 FRENCH AIR FORCE "AERODROME BASE" UNIFORM GROUPING.

A group that consists of a M1938 tunic with matching trousers, overcoat, boots and canteen.

1. The tunic has a five "rounded" button front that leads to a lay down collar with a pair of hooks and eyelets at the neck opening. A wool loop is present to each shoulder area.. Hip pockets and French cuffs complete the construction of the tunic. A pair of badges are to each collar point that represent "Bases d’Aeorstation" are present. The interior is lined in a white linen that bear various cartouches or stamping that includes a date stamp reading "86 XL" and a 1940 date within a cartouche. The chest measures approximately 34". A pair of black painted belt hooks are to each side seam.

2. The matching, straight legged trousers have a three button French fly, with an additional two buttons at the waist, four wool belt loops. The trousers are un-lined with the exception of the waistband that shows various ink stamps. The waist measures approximately 30" with a 26" breech. There is a small moth hole to one leg. Nicely pressed seam.

3. The matching overcoat has a five button front that leads to a pointed, lay down collar with a pair of hooks and eyelets at the neck. A pair of large hip pockets with flaps complete the tunic. The interior is partially lined in white cotton/linen. The chest measures approximately 42".

4. A pair of black leather field shoes that are nicely marked to the bottom of the sole. They do not appear to have been issued or worn.

5. A tin-plated steel canteen, which stands 2cm tall (with a partial cork affixed), is 18cm at its widest point, 8cm deep, and is covered in dark blue wool, which distinguishes it as being for a mountain troop. Fitted unto its tall neck is a cork stopper whose alloy cap has an eye, through which a doubled cord is fed. The other end of the cord is then tied to a swiveling, rectangular alloy "ring," positioned half-way down the laced side of the cover. The neck slopes sharply to either side, with the aforementioned side having a series of eight pairs of eyelets through which its leather lacing passes. Extending through the cover along both of the side seam lines at its widest point are the "rings" to which either end of the brown leather carrying strap is fed. One end folds back upon itself and is fixed through buttonholes by a brass link. The other end loops through its "ring" and connects to itself by means of a metal, sliding length adjustment buckle. Both the leather and wool are in good strong condition.
