C023976 OFFICER'S FORAGE CAP "118TH PENNSYLVANIA INFANTRY" (Identified).

The Officer’s Forage Cap of Colonel Charles M. Prevost: 118th Pennsylvania Infantry "The Corn Exchange Regiment". A superb early example of the Model 1858 Federal army regulation officer’s forage cap with spectacular embossed eagle interior crown, delicate padded silk lining, full sweatband, gorgeous gold and silver bullion U.S. Staff wreath frontal device still held in place by its original stitching, and matched pair of infantry "I" side buttons yet holding one tiny bit of chinstrap. Immortalized for his bravery at the battle of Shepherdstown on September 20th, 1862, Colonel Prevost was first shot in the shoulder then severely wounded by a shell fragment after he grabbed the regimental colors to rally his wavering men and personally charged the front line of the enemy. Inspired by their Commander, the 188th Pennsylvania fought on to sustain nearly 300 casualties, about 40% of their number, as the Colonel was carried off the field. A truly historic piece of Civil War headgear, virtually seething with the heat of battle and documented with solid provenance reaching back to the legendary Stan Landis collection.
