C023693 CANADIAN ANTI-GAS HOOD.

BACKGROUND: With the development of poisonous gasses used as offensive weapons in WWI appropriate defensive gasmasks also had to be developed. In addition anti-gas capes and hoods, made from green colored oilskin fabric, were developed and adopted for use in 1938. A new camouflage pattern, which had the same green colored base with the addition of brown colored areas, was introduced in 1940 and both were used though out the war. With the introduction of the Number 2 anti-gas ointment, the anti-gas hood was made redundant in 1942 and returned stocks were reissued for use as rain hoods.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A six-piece, thin, oilskin fabric hood, with a green and brown camouflage pattern printed to it. Stamped to the interior in white is a "C-broad arrow", the manufacturers name "Tower 1941" and "Toronto."
