C023575 M1874 DYER CARBINE POUCH "Variant".
BACKGROUND:
Though similar in style to the pattern eventually adopted as the Model 1874 Dyer Pouch, this particular pouch differs in four different ways from the standard pattern. The escutcheon plate is fitted with studs that pass through the leather and is held in place by a piece of twisted brass wire that passes through holes in the studs. There is no embossed "US" to the front flap and no markings indicating where the pouch was manufactured. Lastly, the shape of the escutcheon plate is the style used by Benicia and Watervliet Arsenals on their early productions of the M1874 Dyer pouches.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A very nice pouch with leather that is smooth with a bright surface that has no crazing. The gusset is complete with no flexing or loss of surface finish. The white wool lining is present with some loss present. The belt loops are strong and intact, with all of the seams strong with the exception of a half inch section at the top of the gusset on the left side where the gusset joins the rear of the pouch. Of Note: This exact pouch is shown and discussed in detail on page 33 of Dorsey’s "Indian War Cartridge Pouches, Boxes and Carbine boots" and is directly from the author’s research collection.
