1950's French Foreign Legion Kepi for a Sous-Officier (NCO). Indochina and Dien Bien Phu period private purchase Foreign Legion Kepi with the standard blue wool body and red piping and top section of this era. Black leather sweatband. Faded red silk lining with maker label of Girard André, Maître Tailleur ("Master Tailor"). Complete with French Army issue white cover, with blue ARMEE ink stamp (1952 dated) clearly legible. Typical Legion insignia on the front for this period, with the gold brocade chinstrap which distinguishes the NCO Kepi from the enlisted. Front of brim has been pushed up in the style of wear of this period. Scarce! It is hard to find original Foreign Legion Kepis from the immediate postwar and Indochina period with the removable white cover. Sometime in the mid-1950's the Foreign Legion Kepi was changed to a simple Kepi Blanc (white Kepi) without the removable cover and the traditional blue/red wool body underneath. Roughly a size 54-55.
